When to Keep Your Child Home and Get Tested Due to COVID-19 Symptoms
As we head into cold and flu season, we want to take a moment to remind families of when to keep students home and when they need to be tested due to symptoms of COVID-19 before returning to school. The most important thing to keep in mind is that if your child is sick, please keep them home.
The following requirements are based on Washington Department of Health guidelines.
When to get tested for COVID-19:
1. If your student has two or more of these symptoms OR if one lasts longer than 24 hours:
- Congestion or runny nose
- Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
- Sore Throat
2. If your student has ANY of these symptoms:
- Fever (100.4F or higher) or chills
- Cough (new, changed, or worsening)
- Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
- Muscle or body aches
- New loss of taste or smell
What to do after testing for COVID-19:
1. If your student tests negative for COVID-19:
a. Your student may return to school:
- When symptoms have significantly improved AND
- No fever within the past 24 hours (without medication)
2. If your student tests positive for COVID-19:
a. Call and report this to your school nurse or principal as soon as possible
b. Student may return to school:
- After 10 days have passed since symptoms first appeared AND
- No fever within the past 24 hours (without medication) AND
- Symptoms have significantly improved
