Message from Superintendent Miner: Standing in Solidarity with Our Asian and Asian American Communities

Standing In Solidarity

Dear Shoreline Families and Staff,

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, acts of hate and harassment aimed at people of Asian heritage have been on the rise both nationally and locally. Recently, these racist acts have become more frequent and violent. Last week, the media reported that a teacher in a neighboring school district was attacked and badly injured while walking in Seattle’s Chinatown-International District on February 25. This follows a terrible trend of attacks and other acts of racism toward people of Asian heritage that have been reported in our region and across the nation since the pandemic began which have sadly risen to historic levels.

I want to take this opportunity to express our school district’s solidarity with our Asian and Asian American communities in the face of the attacks and harassment that have played out in the media and the many more that go unreported. The kind of hatred that motivates and enables people to commit these kinds of racist acts has no place in our schools or community. As a school district, we are committed to pushing forward our work to create more culturally responsive, inclusive and racially just schools, classrooms and work sites that deepen and strengthen solidarity across all of our diverse communities.

As a school district, we know that education is our primary tool in fighting racism. We will continue this important work with all of the energy, focus and urgency that it deserves. It is my hope that our love and compassion for one another and our solidarity against racism is what will define our schools and community in the face of hate and violence in our communities, state and nation.
