Syre Scratchings - February 2020
Kindergarten registration will begin on Tuesday, February 4th at Syre. In order to attend kindergarten in the fall, your child must be five years old by August 31, 2020 and reside in Syre attendance area. Registration is not on a first-come, first-served basis. All students registered by the close of business on February 28th will be put in a drawing to fill Kindergarten spaces available at Syre.At this time we anticipate having space for two kindergarten classes at Syre. Incoming kindergarten students who have a sibling at Syre will be given priority placement at Syre if registered prior to the close of business on February 28th. Those registering after February 28th will be added to the Syre wait list as they register.
Important Information for the 2020-21 School Year
Mark your calendars! The first day of school for the 2020-2021 school year will be Wednesday, September 2nd (before Labor Day). Students who do not attend the first four days of the school year must be withdrawn and this makes it difficult for class placement. Please plan your family vacations accordingly.
PTA Reflections Art Program
Congratulations to all the students who participated in the PTA’s Reflections Art Program. A special hurray to these three students who moved on to the state competition: Dorothy Summers, Dylan Werbeck and Kate Campbell and to these two students who received honorable mentions: Victoria Facilla and Jimmy Facilla.
Thank you to those families that are calling Syre any time their student will be absent or arriving late. It just takes a minute to call our 24 hour attendance line at (206) 393-4165 and leave a message. Please be sure to include the student’s name, the teacher’s name and the reason for the absence. This is our Safe Arrivals program and ensures that all students are accounted for each day.
Attendance is very important to your student’s success at school Please make every effort to keep absences to a minimum.
To request that a planned absence for vacation be excused we require that you fill out the form attached below, 14 school days prior to the absence.
Boxtops for Education
The BoxTop Program has become digital now with their mobile app. When you buy products from the store, simply scan your receipt using the Box Top app and cash will be added to the school account. You have to scan the receipt within 14 days of purchase.
Each Box Tops clip is worth 10 cents for the school. You can find the Boxtop label on many products like cereal boxes, Go-Gurt, Yoplait, Cleaning Supplies, Ziplocks and More (see btfe.com for a complete list of products). You will be amazed at how they add up and fund lots of great recess and PE equipment for the kids.

Cougar Mountain Cookie Dough Fundraiser
Support the Syre 5th and 6th grade camp fund by purchasing Cougar Mountain Cookie Dough between February 4th - February 25th. All cookie dough flavors are packed in 3 lb tubs and cost $17 per tub. Syre will keep 50% of the proceeds. Cookie dough flavors include: Original Chocolate Chunk, Oatmeal Raisin Cinnamon, Double Chocolate Oregon Hazelnut, Classic Peanut Butter, Chewy Molasses-Ginger, Lemon Cheesecake, All-Butter Rolled Sugar, and Ballpark. Although some dough flavors do not contain nuts, all cookies are made on shared equipment. Cougar Mountain cookie dough can be stored in the refrigerator for two months and the freezer for twelve months.
We ask that all students return their completed order forms, cash, and checks to their teachers no later than Tuesday, February 25th. Checks should be made out to “Syre Elementary.” We will have the cookie dough delivered to Syre on Thursday, March 12th at which time we will need students and parents to pick up their cookie dough orders between 3:00 – 4:00pm. We do not have space to store cookie dough overnight, so please mark this date on your calendars.
Let’s have fun with this event and make some “dough” for Syre’s 5th & 6th grade camps!!!
Calendar of Giving
Happy New Year, Syre Families! Hope that you had a wonderful break... For the rest of this school year we will be collecting different items each month that are needed for the Back to School Event that is held each summer. WHAT IS THE BACK TO SCHOOL EVENT?! The Back to School event is a community effort that provides school supplies, hair cuts, and clothing assistance for families in the Shoreline School District who are living with a low income and/or experiencing circumstances in their life that make it challenging to prepare their children for going back to school in the fall. Look for a "Calendar of Giving" flyer coming home next week with your student that shows which item we are collecting each month ***Spoiler Alert*** February is Toothpaste and Toothbrushes! Syre Wildcats! Keep an eye out for the flyer coming soon in KID MAIL! DD Meats in Mountlake Terrace is giving us %15 of every sale on Friday Feb 28th for all folks who bring in the kid mail FLYER! Yes, this is another camp fundraiser - but who doesn't need meat?!! Stop by on 2/28 and stock up on some of the best deli meat, bacon, or marinades around! You won't be disappointed! Look for the flyer coming home in your child's backpack!
