Wildcats Working Together!
Adopt a Family for the Holidays!
Each year, our community works together to support Syre families needing extra assistance during the holiday season. We are using Sign Up Genius to facilitate the anonymous donations. To sign up, visit: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090448aca6238-support
You can purchase gifts for a child, their entire family, or just donate a gift card for extra food support. Please bring all donations to the Syre office by Monday, December 16.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our Family Advocate, Jill Steinberg at firstname.lastname@example.org or (206) 393-1688.
Thank you for your generosity and helping to make this a happy holiday season for all of our families!
PTA Holiday Food Drive
It's time for our annual Holiday Food and Teen Gift Drive! The drive will take place December (2nd - 13th). The Shoreline PTA provides baskets of food to over 650 families within the district and every school is assigned a different item to collect. Syre's focus this year is: FLOUR. If you are able to donate flour we ask that the bags be the regular size (5 lbs.) and not the Costco sized. Here is the link to sign up for helping during the drive or gift card donations. https://signup.com/go/GzuoqOT
Thanks Wildcats! It's always so wonderful to see how this community comes together to support those in need at this time of year.
Your Community Service Team,
Julia, Sarah, Carolina.
Bad Apples Syre Play
Syre Elementary PTA and Dandylyon Drama are thrilled to bring Dandylyon Drama’s Bad Apples - based on Grimm’s Snow White - to the stage! Performances will be held at Shorewood High School's Performing Arts Center on Friday, December 6th and Saturday, December 7th. Both shows are at 7pm. Remaining tickets will be sold at the door - $7 Adults/ $5 Children, plus a small service fee.
Traffic and Fire Safety at Syre
We recently had the Fire Inspector visit Syre and while our building receiving a glowing report safety inside the building, there was one area we MUST take immediate action on. THERE IS TO BE NO PARKING IN THE FRONT BUS LOOP as it is one of two designated FIRE LANES. Our school has been officially warned that any car parked in the bus lane may be ticketed and that parking enforcement has been notified. We know this is a convenient area to park but for the safety of our students we need to avoid parking in the bus loop area at all times. Parking on the street or south parking lot are the two places for you to park.
We have begun putting cones out behind our school on 195th St and 14th Ave NW as a means of adding extra safety for our students walking to school there. Unfortunately, there are NO sidewalks and the road is very narrow. Parents dropping their students off on this road should be prepared to stop and park at these cross streets and not drive all the way up to the back parking lot where there is a trail that leads to the school.
PLEASE SLOW DOWN AND REFRAIN FROM USING YOUR CELLPHONE near our school.
OUR CHILDREN ARE PRECIOUS AND THEIR SAFETY IS CRITICAL.
Definition of Chronic Absence:
Missing 10% or more of school for any reason - excused or unexcused.
- If a student misses a day every 2 weeks, that is 10% of learning time missed - almost 4 weeks of school.
- It is an indication that a student is academically at risk due to missing too much school
Shoreline Schools is committed to reducing student absenteeism because we want all students to access their education and because attendance is a strong predictor of academic success and graduation rates. While we strongly encourage families to plan any travel during school breaks, we realize that occasionally it is not possible. Syre has a new planned absence form that we request you fill out and submit 14 days prior to the absence to request that your student be excused. The form is attached and also available in the office
Healthy Habits from Nurse Shirley
Is my child too sick for school?
Your student wakes up looking flushed, feeling congested or queasy.
You may be facing the question, "Is my child too sick for school?" To make this decision a little easier keep two C’s in mind: Contagious and Comfort.
Please keep your student home with the following symptoms, which may mean that the illness is contagious:
*Fever above 100 degrees (must be fever free for 24 hours without medication
before returning to school)
*Vomiting or diarrhea (must vomit or diarrhea free for 24 hours before returning to school)
*Sore throat, especially if combined with fever or swollen neck glands.
*Heavy nasal congestion or frequent, incessant cough
*Your student has been diagnosed with a contagious virus or infection
*Thick greenish-yellow drainage from the eyes.
*Rashes unrelated to heat or other known non-contagious causes.
*Unusual fatigue, paleness, lack of appetite, confusion or irritability.
Without any of these symptoms, the question becomes whether your student feels well enough to function comfortably at school. Please feel to call Nurse Shirley in the Syre Health Office at 206-393-4160 if you have any questions.
School District News
North City Campus
North City had been an elementary school for many years until it was closed more than a decade ago. This year, the campus houses one of our two Kindergarten academies. This was put in place so all schools could enact class size reduction in grades K-3 this school year rather than waiting until 6th grade shifts to middle school in the fall. Recently the Board decided that the North City campus would not become an elementary school in the fall.
Highly Capable Self-Contained Program Plans
Students in Shoreline schools who qualify for Highly Capable (or HiCap) services in English language arts or mathematics can have their needs served at their home school site through the walk-to-math program or differentiated instruction by the classroom teacher. Families with a child who qualifies in both areas also have the option to enroll in the HiCap self-contained program at Meridian Park or Ridgecrest. The Board decided on recently to consolidate these programs together on the Meridian Park campus. Although this is disruptive for students in the Ridgecrest HiCap program, this move will allow for larger HiCap self-contained classes (which may cause fewer HiCap combination grade classes) and will allow sufficient space for Ridgecrest to have their attendance area families enrolled K-5 rather than require an off-site Kindergarten placement.
Highly Capable Testing
Registration for Highly Capable Testing is now Open!
Are you interested in having your grade 1-6 student assessed for highly capable services for next year? Shoreline is offering testing for HiCap eligibility in January 2020 for any student not previously screened or tested during the 2019-2020 school year. Please note: All Shoreline Kindergarten and 2nd grade students are screened for highly capable program eligibility in the fall. These students DO NOT need to register for testing. Registration will close on December 20, 2019 at 4pm. No late registrations will be accepted.
For more information or to register on-line, please visit www.shorelineschools.org/Domain/90. You may also contact the HiCap program office at 206-393-4771.
Girls on the Run Coming to Syre
Girls on the Run is coming to Syre this Spring! Girls on the Run is a girl empowerment program that teaches girls important life skills while creatively integrating running and walking. This program is 10-weeks long and is for 3rd-6th grade students that identify as female. The program culminates in a celebratory, non-competitive 5K (3.1 miles).
Girls on the Run is for every girl – the curriculum includes adaptations for girls with sensory, intellectual and physical disabilities. Girls on the Run also provides unlimited scholarships and running shoes and sports hijabs for any girl in need. More information about financial aid can be found here: https://www.gotrpugetsound.org/Program-Registration You will be able to communicate your financial aid needs and request shoes or hijabs for your girl within the online registration form.
Girl Registration opens January 10th, 2020. The team size is 8-15 girls and a random lottery will be used to select the 15 girls for the team if more than 15 girls apply between January 10th-24th. The last day to sign up, if spots are still available, is March 9th, 2020.
