WELCOME TO THE 2019-20 SCHOOL YEAR

This is the first edition of the Syre Scratchings, our monthly newsletter.  Please take the time to read it carefully. It is a joint newsletter with both school and PTA information that you will be receiving on the first of each month.  In addition, every Friday we send out a brief “Weekly Happenings” email that covers only events happening within two weeks. The Principal Highlights Blog with important news from Principal Carroll can be found at https://syreelementary.blogspot.com/

All correspondence is communicated by email.  If you prefer a paper copy sent home with your student please contact Susie Johnson in the office.

Hope to see everyone there!!

PATROL MEETING

Students who signed up to serve as patrol members should meet on Sept. 3 at 2:15 pm in the Syre library to learn about expectations and for training.  This meeting is for students. Parents do not need to attend.

PTA WELCOME COFFEE

Parents, send the kids off to class on Sept. 4th and then stop by for a cup of coffee and a snack from 9:00 - 9:30 am in front of the school. Stop by to catch up with friends you may not have seen over the summer and meet new friends!

We look forward to seeing you!!

ATTENDANCE PROCEDURES AND SAFE ARRIVALS POLICY

If your student will be absent or tardy you must contact the office.  Please call the 24 hour attendance line at 206.393.4165 and leave a message including your student’s name, room number or teacher, and the reason for the absence.  You can also email Susie at susie.johnson@shorelineschools.org or send a note to report an absence or tardy.  If we do not hear from a parent before or on the morning of the absence we will call home to check on the student.  Unless we hear from you, and you have given us the reason for the absence, your student will be marked unexcused.

Good attendance is essential to student success.  We strongly encourage you to schedule travel only during school holidays and breaks.  Occasionally we know this is not possible. If you have a planned absence, please fill out the form attached below and turn it in two weeks prior to the absence to request that your student be excused.

NEW DISMISSAL POLICY

We’re happy to announce that staff has been working hard on creating a new school policy that strengthens our overall security while simultaneously strengthening connections with students. Starting Wednesday, Syre will have new end-of-day dismissal procedures that may impact your previous routine.  Here’s what you need to know for the first day of school….

  1. Classroom teachers will walk their students out to the bus zone, and parent pick up using specific routes for each class.
  2. Parents/Guardians will no longer pick up children outside classroom doors. Instead, families will meet their children at the undercover area of the south parking lot. This is the part of the policy that may interrupt your routine, so modify your plans as needed.
  3. After school clubs will communicate which exterior door students should meet at since they will be walking with their teacher at dismissal.

We appreciate your flexibility and understanding as we work to make Syre a stronger, safer community and look forward to sending your child home at the end of the day with a smile and good word. We are excited for this change and hope you are too.

CURRICULUM NIGHT

Parents, please plan to attend Curriculum Night on Thursday Sept. 19.  This is a very important opportunity for you to learn about the curriculum for the year and about your students’ classroom. This event is for parents.

  • Grades 1-3 from 6:00-6:45pm
  • Grades 4-6 from 6:45-7:30pm
