Sue's News (A brief note from our principal)

9/11/17

Curriculum Night is Thursday!

THANK YOU to our fabulous PTA and RC Staff for making last week’s BBQ such a great success.  We ate, socialized and then ate some more.  I enjoyed meeting so many of you.  What a great way to start the year!

Our first three days of school were amazing as well.  As I walked through the halls, visited classrooms, hung out in the lunchroom and on the playground, there was truly a sense of warmth and community.  We are building relationships as we build our school community—together.

As our Ridgecrest mission states:

“Ridgecrest is a welcoming and supportive community where ALL are empowered to think critically, show compassion, and create change.“

I hope you marked your calendar for our Back to School Curriculum Night.  It is Thursday night!  This is a time to hear from your child's teacher about classroom expectations, routines and curriculum. Unfortunately, due to the recent decline in health of my elderly mother, I will not be in attendance.  Our family is spending as much time with her as possible.  Thanks for understanding.

Here is the schedule for Thursday evening:

6:15-7pm        Session One: 4th-6th grades and Mrs. Laviola’s 3/4 class (meet in your child's classroom)

7:05-7:50pm    Session Two: 1st-3rd grades  (meet in your child's classroom)

Please note that the evening is geared for adults and childcare is not available.

We hope to see you on Thursday!

Sue

Yes, it’s true, school starts this week!

Ridgecrest Staff has been busy preparing for the big Ram Arrival on Wednesday, September 6, our first day of the 2017-18 school year. The first bell rings at 8:35am, so don’t be late! School dismisses at 3pm.

We are so excited to start this new year, but don’t forget…you are invited to the school tomorrow, Tuesday, September 5 to a Meet and Greet, followed by a yummy PTA BBQ.  Come visit your new classroom and meet your new teacher between 3:45-4:30pm.  Then join us outside to eat and meet the whole RC community 4:30-6:30pm!

IMPORTANT CHANGES affecting all students—please read.  The Shoreline School District has adopted a new Nutrition and Wellness Policy that restricts what types of food items we can distribute during the school day. We all care about the health and well-being of our students so in order to follow the new procedures, our staff has agreed to the following:

  • No food items will be allowed for birthday celebrations.  We all love to celebrate, however, we ask that families do not send any food items. Teachers will provide more details regarding classroom celebrations.  Unfortunately, if cupcakes, cookies, donuts, or any food arrives, it will be returned home.
  • Food will not be used as incentive.  There are so many other ways to acknowledge and encourage our Ridgecrest Rams.
  • Any food provided by staff to students during the school day must meet the new smart snack regulations. This means that teachers cannot distribute any items brought by students unless criteria are met.
  • PLEASE NOTE: Students may still bring food of choice for their individual lunches and snacks; however, food cannot be shared with others.

For more details regarding the District Policy and Procedures, please visit the Nutrition and Wellness section on the District website here.  In addition to the policy, there is a great FAQ that will most likely answer your questions, and also some smart snack resources.

One more thing…at Ridgecrest we are excited to announce that we have changed our lunchtime routine so that we will now have recess BEFORE lunch.  It is our hope that students will eat better and be more prepared for learning.

Thank you for joining with us as we support the ‘whole child’ at Ridgecrest—academic, social, emotional, and physical well-being.  See you soon!

Warmly,

Sue (your RC Ram principal)

It’s the middle of June—My oh My!

June has arrived and once again it is going by quickly. With just a little under two weeks of school left, Ridgecrest is a busy place—filled with the comings and goings of field trips, projects, presentations, celebrations, and special times together. It’s a time of many emotions, the excitement of summer vacation, the sadness of saying good bye to those not returning, the joy of moving on to another grade level or school, and the anticipation of the changes that come with a new school year. Yet, as I reflect over the past year, these emotions stand out above the rest— thankfulness and appreciation.

I am so very thankful to be a part of the Ridgecrest community. Parents, students and staff make each year here the best ever. This year has brought some challenges as we faced change. We survived ongoing playground construction and now enjoy a beautiful new field—we love it. Then came the news that next year’s Kindergarten, our “Littlest Rams” will be housed at Meridian Park. We will miss them, but they are part of our community and we will stay connected. Thank you for your patience and flexibility during this time. I really do believe I have the best job in the world and I look forward to each new year with great anticipation. You are the greatest!

I also want to express my appreciation for the many ways our parents and volunteers support our students and staff. Our fabulous PTA has brought the community together for some wonderful events this year—Walk a thon, Carnival, Science Fair, BINGO night and Taste of Ridgecrest— just to name a few. They have also provided wonderful enrichment activities for our students— Read a Thon, Popcorn Fridays, field trips, after school classes, and assemblies. We appreciate you, our PTA volunteers. In addition to our fabulous PTA, Ridgecrest also is supported by wonderful classroom and school volunteers that day after day help our students and teachers get the job done. We appreciate you, our volunteers!

As a special recognition, you are invited to a Volunteer Appreciation Tea in your honor tomorrow, Tuesday, June 13 at 3pm in the library.  We would like to say a huge THANK YOU to you, our wonderful volunteers. You help make Ridgecrest such a wonderful place to work and learn. We hope you can join us. Volunteers truly help plant the seeds of kindness and learning and we appreciate all you do throughout the year.

Have a great summer and see you in September. It will be here before we know it... My oh my!

Sue

9/13/16  Sue’s News…Curriculum Night is Thursday!

First let me say a big THANK YOU to our fabulous PTA and RC Staff for making last Friday's BBQ such a great success.  We ate, socialized and then ate some more.  I enjoyed meeting so many of you.  What a great way to start the year!

I hope you marked your calendar for our Back to School Curriculum Night.  It is Thursday night!  This is a time to hear from your child's teacher about classroom expectations, routines and curriculum. Between sessions, I will also have a chance to share a bit about myself, our wonderful school, and introduce our teachers and PTA.

Also, have you heard that this year at Ridgecrest we are welcoming a new, full-time school counselor, Mr. Dom?  He is settling right into his new home. You will also get to hear a few words from him on Thursday night. Mr. Dom supports our Ridgecrest community in many ways: initiating school-wide social and emotional supports to remove common barriers to student learning, caring for our students by creating behavioral supports to help students build friendships and be successful, and offering individual and/or group school-based short term social and emotional counseling. You can connect with Mr. Dom at (206) 393-4197, or email him at dominic.sickich@shorelineschools.org.  We are so excited to have him join our Ridgecrest community.

Here is the schedule for Thursday evening:

6-6:45pm        Kindergarten-3rd grades and Ms. Witzel’s 3/4 class (meet in your child's classroom)

6:45-7:15pm   Welcome and introductions by Dr. McPeak (meet in the lunchroom)

7:15-8pm        4th-6th grades (meet in your child's classroom)

Please note that the evening is geared for adults and childcare is not available.

See you on Thursday!

9/8/16  Sue’s News…and we’re off!

We did it!  School has started and we have a building filled with happy people.  Thank you for sending your children to school with such bright smiles on their faces and eager minds for learning. The start of a new school year is such fun—lots of new students, parents and staff to meet and greet. Everyone is bubbling with excitement.  I can feel it in the halls; in the classrooms; on the playground; everywhere.  Whoo Hoo!

Are you wondering what’s happening with our field? Students have had fun watching the construction take place these past two days.  The project should be completed by late fall with a brand new artificial surface and new fencing.  No more holes to fall into!  Also they are adding some new benches and tables. Yippee!

Don’t forget to join us TOMORROW at our annual Back to School BBQ, 9/9, 5-7pm. This is a chance to gather with other Ridgecrest families, meet and chat with staff (yep, I’ll be there) and of course, EAT!  Oh, and It is a free event, too! Our RC kids and staff are so lucky to have a PTA that provides enrichment activities, assemblies, academic support, field trips, and so much more.  Hurray for the RC PTA!

While you have your calendar out, also mark down these dates:

Thursday, 9/15:      Ridgecrest Back to School Curriculum Night

6-6:45pm                 Grades K-3 and Witzel’s 3/4 Classroom Presentations

6:45-7:15pm             Welcome and Staff Introductions in the Lunchroom

7:15-8pm                  Grades 4-6 Classroom Presentations

As you’ve heard me say before, I am so excited about this new school year.  We are having a great time—thanks to your children and each of you.  You are the best.

See you soon,

Sue
