BLM Week of Action at Parkwood

Dear Parkwood Families,

Black Lives Matter Week of Action at School is an annual event celebrated in schools across the country during the first week of February.  This past July, the Shoreline School District Board of Directors passed a resolution calling for “...district-wide participation in Black Lives Matter at School Week of Action that is celebrated nationally through discussions and activities that take place in classrooms and beyond.”  I am excited to share what Black Lives Matter Week of Action will look like at Parkwood.

Nationally, the Week of Action is grounded in the Black Lives Matter Thirteen Guiding Principles.  Many of these principles mirror Parkwood’s core values of Community, Collaboration, Academic Excellence, and Respect for Human Differences.  For several weeks, our staff have been hard at work developing lessons and activities that will inspire students and reinforce our school-wide expectations of being Safe, Respectful, Responsible, and Kind.  Classrooms across Parkwood will emphasize eight of the BLM Guiding Principles, including Empathy, Diversity, Loving Engagement, Collective Value, Black Families, Black Villages,  Intergenerational, and Restorative Justice:   

  • Kindergarten 1st, and 2nd grade classrooms will read and write stories about kindness, communities, friendship, and the importance of appreciating diversity. Empathy, Diversity, Collective Value, Loving Engagement, and Restorative Justice. 
  • Our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students are participating in an exploration of how to reach their “inner superhero”. Teachers are working with make-up artists, costume designers, and guest speakers that inspire children to pursue their dreams.  All students received art supplies in their last learning packets and will be making masks to become their inner hero.  Additionally, all students will receive a link to watch the film Spider-Man: Into the SpiderVerse (rated PG).  This movie centers on the character Miles Morales, a Black/Puerto-Rican teenager from Brooklyn who evolves into Spider-Man (his inner superhero). Collective Value, Restorative Justice, Diversity, Empathy.
  • Our 4th and 5th grade students have launched their February novel study of the book Ninth Ward by Jewell Parker Rhodes.  Students have already received a free, autographed copy of this book that they can keep thanks to the generosity of the Shoreline Foundation, Third Place Books, and the author herself.  Ninth Ward tells the story of Lanesha, a twelve year-old Black girl who lives in New Orleans with loving caretaker Mama Ya-Ya.  The book shares Lanesha’s experience caring for her community during hurricane Katrina.  Empathy, Loving Engagement, Black Villages, Black Families, Intergenerational, Collective Value. 

Black Lives Matter at School Week of Action is a national experience that underscores the values Parkwood already embraces.  I am thankful that our community deeply prioritizes inclusion, diversity, and kindness.
