Salmon Release Project
On a non-student day in March, Mr. Owen and some of his fifth graders, along with Denise Shafer and a few girls from Girl Scout Troop 40011, visited Boeing Creek for an early release of some of our school-raised salmon. The salmon needed to be released due to overcrowding in our salmon tank. Click to view a short video of the release process. (Requires Quicktime)
Highland Terrace fifth graders hold fertilized coho salmon eggs that were nurtured at the Issaquah fish hatchery.
The fertilized coho salmon eggs are transparent. Can you see the baby salmon’s eye?
Students gently dropped their salmon eggs into the salmon tank. The tank’s water quality and temperature is carefully monitored to ensure salmon growth and survival.
Stop by our salmon tank and take a close look at the salmon as they leave their eggs and develop into the next stage of life called “alevin.”
