    Kylene Glasser-Kindergarten Teacher

    Kylene
I did my student teaching in Kindergarten and am currently teaching summer school for incoming 2nd graders in Everett. This will be my first year as a full time Kindergarten teacher; however, I am not new to the education system. I was an educational interpreter for the Deaf, working with high school students for 10 years prior to my teaching program. I love to spend time with my dog (Bentley) playing at the park or cuddling up with him and a movie. I also like to play sports such as softball and kickball. I am a recent graduate of UW Bothell. The last book I read was The Impatient Caterpillar and Sharp Objects. I recently got back from a trip to California for a music festival and a day in Disneyland. I am a huge Disneyland fan so this was the highlight of my summer. I have also been filling my time gathering new items for my classroom!

One of my favorite things about teaching Kindergarten is the amount of growth you see in each student throughout the year. You will be amazed at how much your child grows socially, academically, and personally. I am eager to share my love of learning with all of my students and help establish the foundation for loving school and loving to learn through celebrating their daily successes.

    Caitlin McNulty-Kindergarten Teacher

    Caitlin

Hi everyone, I'm so excited to meet all of you. Go Team Kindergarten! I have worked as a teacher and literacy coach for the past 9 years in Houston, TX and most recently in Northshore School District. I love to rock climb, hike, spend time outside, and read. I graduated from the University of St. Thomas with my M.A. in Teaching Leadership and from the Evergreen State College for my B.A. I just finished reading “Thanks for the Feedback” and “Between the World and Me.” I'm spending all the time I can backpacking and climbing in the North Cascades.

    Parent Encouragement

Kindergarten Parents,  I am so excited to help your child grow and learn this year! My goal is to help your child learn to love school, form positive relationships, and become a reader, writer and mathematician.

    Rachel Belfield-School Office Manager

    Rachel
It is my pleasure to introduce you all to our newest colleague, Rachel Belfield. Rachel has already started in her role as office manager and registrar for the North City Kindergarten program for the 2019-20 school year. Some quick facts about Rachel:

    - Rachel most recently worked as the marketing director at Committee for Children (creators of the Second Step SEL program), but left in late 2018 to take a break and reflect on how to bring some balance to her home and work life.

    - In her free time, Rachel usually spends time with her 6 year-old daughter, Mira (1st grader at Briarcrest), and 4 year-old son, Cameron (preschooler at Edwin Pratt). She tries to attend cardio dance fitness classes with her sister and friends, and dreams of the when she can regularly read books without pictures (and with big words) and run for fun rather than chasing down a little person in a parking lot

    - Shorecrest High School (Go Scots!) and Boston University

    - Let’s Pretend This Never Happened by Jenny Lawson

    - Summer’s gone! But it was the first time I’ve ever had a summer vacation off with my kids, and I’m looking forward to at least a few weeks together like this ever year now. We had a blast traveling, playing with neighbor friends, and just enjoying quality time together!

"Your children will be welcomed to a safe and supportive environment every day at North City, as will you. As a parent of kids ages 4 and 6, I totally get the excitement you’re feeling and the worries you have about the unknown, for your child and for yourself. (I wish someone had given me a manual on how to be an elementary school parent when my daughter started last year!) I look forward to learning about your families, supporting you, and gathering lots and lots of “kids say the darnedest things” stories this year!"

    Amy Gourde-Dean of Students

    Amy G

I come to North City from Edmonds School District, where I was a Student Support Advocate. I have served in a variety of roles throughout my career: taught youth in jail, supervised an after school program, supported kids impacted by AIDS, served in the Peace Corps. All of my work has always centered around the care and support of young people.

I live on a boat with my husband, daughter and cat. I enjoy paddling around the marina or other ports of call or just hanging in the hammock with a book.

    Parent Encouragement

I am so excited to spend this important year with you and your children!

    Laurie Pearson-Kindergarten Teacher

    Laurie

Hi, my name is Laurie Pearson and I will be teaching kindergarten at North City this year. This will be my 34th year teaching, with most of them spent teaching kindergarten at Lake Forest Park Elementary. I graduated from the University of Washington and love Husky football!  I also have a Masters degree in Early Literacy from Walden University. Outside of the classroom you will find me cooking, walking, reading, traveling, & spending time with my family, which includes 4 grandkids! One of my favorite books that I read this summer was Small Great Things by Jodi Picoult. I am looking forward to be joining the North City staff for this upcoming year.

    Parent Encouragement

I believe that kindergarten is the beginning of an exciting journey for both the children and their families as we join together to learn, laugh, and grow. “Children are born with all the curiosity they will ever need. It will last a lifetime if they are fed upon a daily diet of ideas.” Charlotte Mason

    Kathy Ross-Kindergarten Teacher

    Kathy

My name is Kathy Ross and I will be teaching kindergarten at North City. This will be my 26th year teaching kindergarten (with a couple of first grade years along the way). For the last seven years I have been part of the amazing Kindergarten Team at Lake Forest Park. I attended Seattle Public Schools and received my degree in Elementary Education at Western Washington University. Outside of the classroom, my favorite thing to do is spend time with my husband, our three adult children and their spouses, and my almost 3 year old grandson. I love boating and camping at Lake Chelan, reading (the last book I read this summer is Where the Crawdads Sing, which I highly recommend!), movies, history, travel, walking with my dog, Kenya, and snuggling with my cat, Blue. During the summer I spent a week camping at our family property up lake on Lake Chelan. The biggest thrill was having our grandson for a week while his parents were out of town. We had lots of wonderful adventures! I am excited to get into my new classroom and get it all set up for a wonderful year of kindergarten.

    Parent Encouragement

I know this is going to be a new adventure for all of us, whether this is your first child in kindergarten, your last, or somewhere in the middle. I am very passionate about kindergarten and I truly believe your child’s kindergarten year is the most important as it lays the foundation for all the years ahead. My goals are to make this a happy time of growth, to have your child enjoy coming to school and to love learning new things, and to ensure that all my students feel capable, successful, and an integral member of our classroom community. It all starts in kindergarten and that is why I chose to come to North City for this upcoming year! Working together, I know we will make it a fantastic year!

    Chelsey Hays-School Counselor

    Chelsey

My name is Chelsey Hays and I am looking forward to being your school counselor for the 2019-2020 school year!

I have worked with kids and their families for over 20 years in various roles and this past June, I received my Masters in School Counseling from Seattle Pacific University. I did my education block hours in a Seattle Public School kindergarten classroom and my counseling practicum and internship in a Seattle Public Middle School. While I did love my experience with middle schoolers, I am really excited to return to working with younger kids and their families and supporting them through this exciting new time of firsts.

On my downtime, I love to spend time with my husband and three kids outdoors hiking or at the beach, cooking, reading, watching movies, traveling and spending time with friends. I’m currently studying to take my licensed mental health counseling exam but have still managed to find lots of time for fun over the summer with my kiddos. We are looking forward to our trip in August to Sunriver, Oregon for bike riding and lots of sun before the school year ramps up.

    Parent Encouragement

As a parent of three, one being a new kindergartener this coming school year, I want to empathize with all of the families around all the emotions. It is a time of excitement, nerves, unknowns, and new beginnings. As your school counselor, I am honored to be able to be here as a resource and support. I look forward to meeting each of your kids and being your partner to help their kindergarten year be a success!

    Robin Norton-Kindergarten Teacher

    Robin

I have been teaching kindergarten at Daniel Bagley Elementary School in Seattle, since 1999. I received my Bachelor's degree in education at the University of West Florida, acquired 2 Montessori certifications, and am currently completing my Master's Degree with Chaminade University in Honolulu. In my off time, I love to travel and go boating with my family and friends. The beach is my ultimate happy place. The last book I read was becoming Supernatural by neurologist Dr. Joe Dispenza. This summer I had a wonderful trip to Alaska with my mother, a number of RV camping trips, and have enjoyed our jet boating excursions up the Snohomish river.

    Parent Encouragement

I am incredibly excited to meet all of your amazing children. It's going to be a VERY special year!

    Larry Tiritilli-School Psychologist

I have worked for over 20 years in public education, serving preschool through high school students in Kirkland and Redmond (Lake Washington School District), and here in Shoreline’s preschool and Echo Lake Elementary for the past 4 years. When not working, I stay busy with my kids, both in secondary schools, and driving all over for soccer and volleyball events, as well as any quality time I can get with my wife, Mirta. I enjoy traveling and planning trips. I travel frequently to Peru, where his in-laws live, and to California where he is originally from. I graduated from Central Washington University’s graduate program for School Psychology in 1999. The last book I read was from the Game of Thrones series. This summer, I’m spending time on projects around the house, doing stuff with the kids, and traveling around to my son’s soccer tournaments, including one in San Diego, which will be the first stage in a summer road trip before coming back to work.

    Parent Encouragement

Kindergarten is a major transitional year, even for those kids that have been in preschool, and the growth from the day they start to the last day of the school year will be one of the biggest leaps of their lives in school as it will be a sixth of their entire life.  The tunnel may seem long and dark at times, but there is a light down there in June!

    Matt Law-Kindergarten Teacher

    Matt
I have taught in Shoreline for 5 years and prior to that I taught Preschool at headstart for 5 years as well.
During my off time I love playing soccer, it is my passion (it can also be my bane). As I've gotten older I've realized I love coaching as well. My daughter plays select and I also coach two teams. I really enjoy being able to develop players and help them explore a passion that has stuck by me longer than anything else.

I graduated from Central Washington University. The last book I read was, "So You Want to Talk about Race?" by Ijeoma Oluo.

My plan for the summer is to recover from surgery and get healthy.

    Parent Encouragement
We are all in this together, and I truly mean this. We (my colleagues included) are always looking for ways to not only support your child but also support your entire family. We understand that this is not just a step for your child but also a step for you. I still remember the butterflies I had when I sent my daughter and son to kindergarten. I knew they would be safe and taken care of but it was hard to accept that they are growing and getting older. By the end of the year, I was in tears just seeing how their teachers, cultivated a love for learning that they still carry with them. I will do everything in my power to help you and your child feel the same way.

    Arianna Atwater-Student Teacher from SPU

My name is Arianna, and I am going to be Matt Law’s student teacher this year at North City. I’m super excited to get started and also quite nervous as well.

I'm currently a graduate student at Seattle Pacific University getting my master's in teaching through an accelerated program that is only one year. I'm originally from Hawaii and moved here five years ago to attend Seattle Pacific University where I also got my B.A. in Education this past June. I've worked with students a lot through summer school classrooms back home in Hawaii, where I worked for four summers. I've had experience with grades K-5 and the older they get, the more attitude they get, and that is why I love kindergarteners! I've also babysat for a family that has a sixth grade, third grader, and kindergartener for the past year and a half. On my spare time, I enjoy being near the water and being outside on the rare occasion that the sun is out. Unfortunately, most of my spare time is consumed with doing school work. The last book I read for fun was a book called Eight Dates about strengthening different aspects of your relationship and it even organizes a date to go on at the end of each chapter with questions for conversation. This summer I've been working and I'm finishing up my first quarter of grad school this weekend before starting my internship in the upcoming weeks.

    Trudy Mower-Kindergarten Teacher

    Trudy

Hi! I am Trudy Mower. I was born and raised in Auburn, Washington, and am now proud to call Shoreline my home. I have been teaching children in public schools for ten years in the Seattle school district. I have my BA in education, and my MA in administration through Western Washington University. I love teaching, because I get such energy from the children. It's fun to be creative and problem solve, learn new things in different and unique ways. I especially love teaching children how to name their emotions and build emotional intelligence. It's such rewarding work. I can't wait to start at North City!

When I am not teaching children, I take bike rides, practice yoga, sing, and write songs on my guitar, play with my nieces and nephews, and get out into nature as much as possible. I am also a proud mama of two kitties who endlessly entertain my partner and I.

This summer I have been on several road trips. My cousins live in Portland, and I got to meet my cousin's brand new baby. I spent several days in a silent meditation retreat in the Willamette Valley. I rode bikes around the North Cascades, took a tour of Bainbridge Island, and hiked to the top of a waterfall. Reading is a big passion of mine. I read yoga books, books about how to grow my teaching practice, and many genres of fiction. I just finished one about the Northwest Coastal Natives, and fell in love with the culture. I am so inspired!

    Parent Encouragement

I look forward to meeting your child. I believe kindergarten is an important year to support a child's blooming imagination, to guide them in making and keeping friends, as well as setting the stage to become impassioned lifelong learners. My goal is to introduce your child to public school in a loving, heart-based way with high standards of how we treat each other and regard education. I can't wait to read with your child, teach math, social studies and art. Sing songs, make up dances, and play imagination games. It is my pleasure to teach at North City Elementary this year!

I began my career as a Kindergarten teacher and academic coach in Texas. I then served as an assistant principal and elementary school principal for Houston Independent School District (7th largest school system in the nation). I'm most notably known for turning low performing schools into the highest performing schools in the district and state. I most recently served as an elementary principal at a dual language school in the Kent School District. I've been a school leader for 8 years and am still very passionate about the work and calling to lead.

I am fluent in Spanish, love hiking, kayaking, and traveling. I'm an avid reader (I read at least 50 books a year). I earned my Bachelor’s degree from Tarleton State University, my Master’s degree from St. Mary’s University. Lynn Gardnier-LAP Teacher

Hello! I am thrilled to be joining the North City Community as the .5 LAP Teacher. I look forward to getting to know you and meeting all of those excited kindergarten faces next month!  This will be my seventh year teaching in Shoreline, following seven years in Edmonds. Previously, I've taught in Colorado, Utah, New York, and New Zealand, and my classrooms have included all elementary grade levels as well as pre-service teachers at the University of Canterbury. My undergraduate degree is in Integral Liberal Arts (a Great Books program) from St. Marys College in California. I also hold a Teaching Certificate from the University of Colorado at Boulder and an MEd from the University of Canterbury in New Zealand. I earned my National Board Certification eight years ago. Throughout my career, my greatest love has been teaching literacy, so I am especially excited to begin this new chapter working in the LAP program. This summer I traveled to England and Portugal, and spent two weeks volunteering in Ghana with my son. My favorite summer read was Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi, a historical fiction novel that follows the history the transatlantic slave trade from its beginnings in Ghana through its legacy in the US today.  It helped me to understand much that we saw when we were in Ghana.

    Jennie Wilkie-School Nurse

    Jennie

    Hello North City Team,
I just finished 2 years of school nursing at Highland Terrace Elementary and am thrilled to begin with the Kindergarteners here at North City. I love to read (I just finished Where the Crawdads Sing- so good!), go for walks, travel and spend time with my family during my time off. This keeps me pretty busy! I graduated from Western Washington University with a Bachelors Degree in Psychology, and went back to school when my kids were older to obtain my nursing degree from Shoreline Community College.  I've very much enjoyed being a part of the community as the nurse, taking care of our students in a wholistic manner.

I just got home from a very fun history trip with my sister (she is a school counselor in Auburn) to Charleston, SC and then finishing up in Washington DC. So much to see and do!  I'm planning to enjoy the sunshine and the outdoors for the rest of summer and to read some more good books.

I'm looking forward to meeting all of our new kindergarteners and families. Please feel free to contact me at jennie.wilkie@shorelineschools.org for any questions you may have regarding immunization requirements or health concerns. See you soon!

This summer we just got back from a 9 day camping adventure in Banff and Kootenay National Parks in Canada.  In addition we’ve had several friend gatherings closer-by that we’ve been able to camp at.  This is our first summer co-owning an itty bitty little camping trailer and it has been tons of fun to explore the great outdoors with it.

Hello, everyone! My name is Diana (pronounced Deanna; there's another Diana, whose name is actually pronounced Diana) and I will be a paraeducator, student supervisor, and health assistant at North City Kindergarten Program for the 2019-2020 school year.

This is my 3rd school year with Shoreline Public Schools. I started at Meridian Park Elementary, where I worked for 2 school years, as a crossing guard and a paraeducator at a 3rd grade classroom. In 2013, I graduated from Oregon State University with a B.S. in Wildlife Biology.
In my off time, I enjoy birdwatching, bird photography, listening to audiobooks, and going for nature walks.
The last book I heard was "Mean Streak" by Sandra Brown. Psychological and mystery thrillers is my favorite genre.
This past summer, my family and I went to Portugal to visit our family (my husband and I are Portuguese). Whenever we go, we like to take 1-2 week-long roadtrip, to explore and getting to know our home country better; the kids love it!

We're in this together. The team we have is a great one and your kids are a pleasure to work with. I can't wait to see how we will all grow together as a school and as a community!

    Michelle Fogerty- Paraeducator

    Michelle Fogerty

This is my first year as a paraeducator, and I'm really loving working with the students at NCKP.  I received my Bachelor's degree in Sociology from Smith College, and most of my career has been spent in banking operations.  I have a 10 year old in 5th grade at Lake Forest Park Elementary and have been deeply involved with the PTA for several years.  My favorite hobbies are reading and baking and am enjoying teaching my daughter how to create deliciousness in the kitchen.

I remember how overwhelming the Kindergarten year was as I got used to have a child in school; your child is in great hands with us and before long you'll both be experts!

This is my 5th year as a paraeducator in the Shoreline School District.  I have been at Lake Forest Park Elementary for the last 4 years.   I am also a parent and have a 7th grader and 4th grader in the district.   I decided to work for the Shoreline School District when my youngest started kindergarten.   I fell in love with volunteering and being in the classroom and school environment.   I have a passion for working with children and it is a gift to come to work at a job that I love.    In my spare time I enjoy watching my boys play sports, reading, taking walks and watching UW Husky football and basketball.   As a resident of Lake Forest Park, a community member, a parent and an employee of the district I feel a deep connection and investment in the children I work with.

Looking forward to a great year!

    Sari Wall- Paraeducator

    Sari Wall

My name is Sari Wall and I am thrilled to be spending my mornings with the future Echo Lake Eagles in Ms. Mower’s class. After spending a fun filled 10 years teaching preschool at Shoreline Covenant Preschool, I moved to Echo Lake to be a paraeducator. I have a daughter who is a sophomore at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego, but it seems like not long ago she was a kindergartener at Echo Lake Elementary.  My second daughter is a junior at Shorewood High School.  I love to spend my free time reading a good book, tending my garden, or painting with watercolors.  In the spring, my husband and I like to fly to Fresno to visit with our family and check up on our family cherry farm.  Be sure to wave hello if you see me helping kids cross the street on Meridian and 195th!

  • Melonie Showlund- Occupational Therapist

    Melanie Showlund

I’ve been an occupational therapist in the Shoreline School District since 2007. I got my Master’s in Occupational Therapy at the University of Washington, as well as my undergraduate degree so I’m a true Husky! I mostly work with preschool through elementary school (this year I travel to 4 schools) but I have also worked with our middle school students. I love to spend time with my big fluffy labradoodle puppy in my free time, and traveling as much as possible (I’ve been to Iceland, France, Italy, Ireland, and Moldova). I’m passionate about early intervention, the importance of play in learning, and supporting handwriting instruction in K-2 grades.

Kindergarten is such a fun and exciting year with so much growth for students! They will be learning a lot, and at this age it is still important for them to have lots of time to play (which is how young students learn best). Your student will be well supported here at North City and we’re all excited for the amazing year ahead!
