  My name is Rachel Brucker, and I have been at Parkwood since fall 2014. My background has been primarily in public health, communicable disease, and community health. I work with the Parkwood staff to promote student learning by doing my best to keep students healthy, safe, and engaged.

Parkwood families - we have had a number of students out with a “stomach bug”. This is likely caused by a very infectious virus like norovirus, which can cause vomiting, diarrhea, stomach ache, and loss of appetite. If your student has these symptoms, please keep them home. They need to be at least 24 hours fever- and vomiting-free before they return. Please keep them home to let them rest and not spread illness to others, and encourage good hand washing!

We are also seeing a number of students diagnosed with strep throat, especially in the 3rd grade. Common symptoms include pain with swallowing, fever, and swollen tonsils. Strep throat usually does NOT come with a runny nose and cough, which are common in other causes of a sore throat. If your student has these symptoms, please keep them home and contact their healthcare provider. A test is needed to diagnose strep throat, and antibiotics are usually used to treat it. Students with strep throat may return 12 hours after they start antibiotics, when they have been fever-free for 24 hours, and when they feel well enough to be in school.

• Students need to receive required immunizations PRIOR to the first day of school
• You can submit updated immunization records in any of the following ways:
  • Clinic (or you) can fax records to 206-393-4158
  • Bring hard copy of records to Parkwood office
  • Call nurse (206-393-4153) and leave a message with the student’s name, vaccine, and exact date it was given

• Health screening is performed based on state law (WAC http://apps.leg.wa.gov/wac/default.aspx?cite=246-760 ) and district policy

  Vision screening

  • Vision screening is provided for all students in grades K, 1, 2, 3, and 5, plus any other time a parent or staff member has a concern.
  • Vision screening is generally conducted in the fall. You will not be contacted if your student passes this screening. If the screening identifies possible concerns, you will be sent a letter recommending they have a complete exam by an eye professional.
  • Washington State recently changed the requirement for vision screening at schools. Starting fall 2017, students will be screened for issues with near vision in addition to distance vision. The updated rule also allows schools to use instrument-based vision screeners, which allow for quick detection of a range of vision issues without any reading of eye charts. Schools in Shoreline will primarily use a SPOT Vision Screener, although traditional eye charts may also be used.

  Hearing screening

  • Hearing screening is provided for all students in grades K, 1, 2, 3, and 5, plus any other time a parent or staff member has a concern.
  • Initial hearing screening is generally conducted in the fall.
  • If a second screening identifies possible concerns, you will be sent a letter recommending further evaluation by a healthcare provider. 

  If you have questions or concerns about your student’s vision or hearing, or the screening procedures, please contact the School Nurse (206-393-4153).

• A doctor’s order, signed by the parents, is required for all medications given at school. This includes prescription and over-the-counter medication.
• If at all possible, medication should be given at home
• For short-term medications, parents can come to school and administer it to their student themselves

Reasons to keep your student home this year are different than in past years. Shoreline School District will follow guidelines from Public Health - Seattle & King County and Washington State Department of Health in deciding when and for how long students and staff need to stay home. 

Go to Shoreline Schools District's Health Services website for detailed information about when and for how long to keep your student home. Testing for COVID-19 is recommended frequently, even for mild illness. This is one important step in keeping students and staff safe while at school. We know it can be difficult at the moment to get a quick, confirmatory test!
