Power and Internet Outages

  • In the event of a power or network outage prior to or during the school day, the District will determine whether school will be canceled or delayed using the following criteria:

    • If the power or network outage is widespread across Shoreline and Lake Forest Park, with most schools and students’ homes impacted, the school day will likely need to be delayed or canceled for the entire district. The District will decide between delay or cancellation based on service downtime estimates provided by power and internet service providers.

    • If a power or network outage is localized to one or more schools, but remains up for most students’ homes, the District will decide if remote learning can continue by determining if it is possible to move on-site teaching staff to another facility or are able to work from home. In this event, it may be necessary to cancel or delay classes at one or more schools, but not all.

    • If a power or network outage is not widespread but impacts some students’ homes, the District will decide whether to delay or cancel school based on estimates of service downtime and the number of homes impacted provided by power and internet service providers. In this event, it may be necessary to cancel or delay classes at one or more schools, but not all.

In any event when school continues but some students are impacted by power or network outages and are unable to work from home or another location, they will be excused and expected to make up their work for missed classes as they would for absences caused by other reasons.

If a teacher’s power or internet goes out during class, students should log off of Zoom and wait for communication from their school or teacher. Middle and high school students should attend their other classes according to their regular schedule.

As with any emergency change to the school schedule, families will be notified by automated phone call and email. The information will also be posted to our website and district social media pages.

If school is canceled, it will typically be made up on one of the days designated as a “school make-up day” on the school calendar. If school is delayed or dismissed early, the student day will be adjusted but will not be made up.
