Vision and Hearing Screening

Nurses conduct health screening based on state law and district policy.

Vision screening

• Vision screening is provided for all students in grades K, 1, 2, 3, 5, and 7, plus other times a parent or staff member has a concern. Schools are required to screen for both near and distance vision concerns.
• Vision screening is generally conducted in the fall or early winter. If the screening identifies possible concerns, you will be sent a letter recommending your student have a complete exam by an eye professional.
• Nurses in Shoreline School District primarily use a SPOT Vision Screener to complete screening, although traditional eye charts may also be used.
• If you need assistance accessing an eye doctor or glasses, please contact the nurse at your student's school.

Hearing screening

• Hearing screening is provided for all students in grades K, 1, 2, 3, 5, and 7, plus other times a parent or staff member has a concern.
• Initial hearing screening is generally conducted in the fall or early winter. If the screening identifies possible concerns, you will be sent a letter recommending your student visit their primary care provider or pediatrician for an additional evaluation. They can then be referred to a hearing specialist if needed. 
• Shoreline has a District Audiologist and Teacher for Deaf/Hard of hearing students when needed. Contact your school nurse with questions or concerns about your student's hearing.
