Welcome to Kindergarten at Meridian Park, Cheetah Family!

The Kindergarten team and the entire Meridian Park school community are excited for a wonderful year coming together with so many kindergarten students and families from across the district.  Kindergarten is a wonderful new adventure of growing and learning. We are looking forward to partnering with you to provide each child and family a safe, positive, and productive learning experience. We know that in order to be successful, our children will need support from both the home and school. We know a strong partnership with you will make a great difference in your child’s education. As partners, we share the responsibility for our children’s success and we are fully committed to carry out our responsibilities. Thank you for reading all of this information in order to best guide and support your child’s learning.

    Class Lists:

Classroom assignments will be provided prior to the Meet-the-Teacher Dinner on Thursday, August 29th. On Thursday afternoon, each family will receive an email with the name and room number of your child’s classroom teacher. The message will be sent to the email addresses that were provided upon registration. We will also have some educators standing by with master lists to help everybody get where they need to be! If you opted in for district text messaging, you should also receive a brief SMS text message with just the teacher name and room number.

Like all schools, we experience many changes in kindergarten enrollment and registrations in late August. In order to give all students the best possible kindergarten experience, we place importance on making balanced classes and placing students with a cluster of children from their neighborhood. We may need to shift classroom assignments prior to and even after the first day of school. Thank you for your understanding.

    Classroom Visit and Meet-the-Teacher:

On Thursday, August 29th, Kindergarten classrooms will be open for a short visit from 5:00 – 6:00 pm. It is a great opportunity to meet the teacher, see the classroom space, and help ease first day jitters. Please bring school supplies to your child’s classroom at this time, if possible. A list of supplies is at the end of this letter. This is also a chance to sign up for a WAKids conference time with your child’s classroom teacher. The conferences will take place on Wednesday through Friday, September 4-6. Following the open classroom session is an all-school dinner from 6:00-7:00 pm. Please watch for a flyer from the PTSA about the dinner.

    WaKIDS Family Discussion:

There is NO SCHOOL for Kindergarten on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday September 4th, 5th, 6th.  Across the state, all Kindergarten families participate in a 30 minute WaKids Family Discussion at the start of the year.  This is a chance for each family to help the classroom teacher learn more about their child’s interests, culture, and family.  Sign-ups will be available on August 29th during the open classroom session at 5:00 pm.  Discussions will take place between 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM on the no-school days (Sept. 4-6).  Students are welcome to attend but are not required to be at the meeting.

Please start thinking of some helpful information for the teachers to know about your child and family. For example:  What makes your child happy or sad? What activities does your child really enjoy? In what areas does your child excel or struggle?  What are your hopes or concerns? How does your child respond to new situations?

First Day of School for Kindergarten – Monday, September 9th, is a 1/2 Day!

Your child’s first day will be Monday, September 9th.  THIS IS A HALF-DAY!

If your child’s last name begins with A-L, we will see you in the AM ONLY.  Begin at 9:05 – End at 11:45

If your child’s last name begins with M-Z, we will see you in the PM ONLY.  Begin at 12:50 – End at 3:30

Tuesday, September 10th is a full day of school for ALL students

Bus transportation will be provided for both the AM and PM.

Teas & Tissues:  A Gathering for Families

The Meridian Park PTSA and Derek Dalasta would like to invite all parents, grandparents, and/or guardians to meet outside the main entrance of the school for a community gathering to celebrate your child’s first day of school.  We will have some tea to drink, tissues to wipe away any tears of joy, time to get to know each other, and a short message to join our community together.

    Classroom Supply List:

The Kindergarten supply list is attached to this letter and available at this link.  The list includes which materials will be shared and which are personalized for your child.  You are welcome to bring these items to the classrooms when you come for the Meet-the-Teacher or bring them with you to your family meeting.

    Arrival and Dismissal Times:

    Classroom doors open at 9:05

    Instruction begins at 9:10

    Dismissal is at 3:30

Teachers will open their doors and greet students at the exterior classroom door at 9:05 each morning. Each exterior door has numbers on the window indicating the classroom number. Parents are required to supervise their children in the morning until the teacher opens their door. You are welcome to walk with us into the class and stay for a few minutes on the first day.  At the end of the day, you may pick up your child at the exterior door as well. The school day ends at 3:30. Please do not enter through the hallway as we use that space and those doors for bus rider arrival and dismissal.

For student safety, we ask adults to stay with your child until 9:05 am.

    Partial Release Wednesdays:

We are in our 2nd year of Partial Release Wednesdays; most Wednesdays during the year, our students will be dismissed at 1:50 PM, so that our staff will have time for professional learning.  In previous years, we would occasionally have non-student work days throughout the year, and we have made great use of this model for more timely, ongoing work with our teachers. The following link has more information, including options for child care and specific dates of the partial release Wednesdays. https://www.shorelineschools.org/domain/1456

    Attendance:

Attendance at school is important and valuable for a child’s learning.  The tardy bell is at 9:10 am. If your student will be absent or late, please contact the Kindergarten office in person or by phone, 206-393-4127.

    Breakfast, Lunch, & Snack:

Free or reduced breakfast or lunch are available for families who qualify; watch for information in your back to school packet.  Breakfast costs $1.85 and lunch costs $3.35.  To make it easy, students have a meal card. If you plan to have your child buy breakfast/lunch regularly, we suggest making payments online at the following link https://wa-shoreline.intouchreceipting.com or by depositing checks in the drop box outside of the main office.  If you pack a lunch, please send food in containers your child can open. We will have a small snack in the classroom each day.  Most often we will share a common snack. Please notify the nurse and classroom teacher of any allergies. We are very interested in additional adult help in the lunchroom, especially during the first few weeks, so please come help out if you have time.

    Curriculum Night:

Kindergarten Curriculum night is scheduled for Tuesday, September 24th from 5:00 – 6:00 pm.  Teachers will talk about their classroom program, general school information, and answer questions you have about the year.

    Vistors:

All visitors must enter through the front door of the building and sign-in on the list in the front office. You will receive a visitor’s badge that must be kept on for the duration of your visit here.

    Immunization:

Washington state law requires that all children be fully immunized on or before the first day of school.  Please make sure you have turned into the kindergarten office proof of immunizations. Tama Leahy, our Nurse can help answer your questions.  tama.leahy@shorelineschools.org

    Transportation:

    • Kindergarten students who attend their home school and live outside of the 1 mile walk area or in an area designated as a hazardous walk area by the district are eligible for school bus transportation.  All Kindergarten students will be provided transportation from neighborhood stops. The bus stops for our students are located at the stop they would use for their home schools, or at the loading zone for the home school itself.
    • In order to help our kindergarten families, our kindergarten students have already been routed! Other students in the district have not been routed yet.
    • To find the location and times of your student’s bus stop please log into E-Link or call 206-393-4277.  You will be asked to enter your student’s grade and home mailing address including zip code.
    • Kindergarten bus riders are encouraged to ride the bus each day starting with the first day.
    • Children will be met at the bus and taken to their classroom by an adult. Students will receive K tags to wear on their backpacks the first week.  Due to careful attention to K students getting on and off the bus, the bus may be running a few minutes late the first week.
    • Transportation requires an adult to be at the bus stop before allowing a K child off the bus.  We strongly encourage you to be 5 minutes early if possible. The bus cannot wait, so if an adult does not meet the child on time, the child will be returned to school.  If this happens, we’ll give the student a snack and call for an adult pick-up!
    • Classroom teachers find it very helpful to know more information about the daily transportation of your child.  Please complete the transportation instructions at the following link https://goo.gl/XWPdpZ and return it at the barbecue or at your family meeting.
