    5th Grade Newsletter - September 13, 2019

    Dear Families,

It has been a great beginning to the school year. We have established some routines and enjoyed getting to know each other. This is an amazing group of students and I am so excited about all the things we will get to do together this year!

We have kicked off the year with an environmental science unit related to Ecosystems. Earlier this week, Julie Luthy, an environmental science teacher, led the students in a simulation that demonstrated why wetlands are so important to the health of our ecosystems. Julie will be back next week for more exciting science lessons. We will be going on a field trip Thursday, October 3rd to Blue Heron Park to do water sampling and determine how healthy our watershed is. It is a walking field trip and we will need at least 6 volunteers for our class. I will be sending more information about this field trip next week.

Camp Orkila!!! We are so excited to be taking the fifth graders to Camp Orkila this year. Thank you for getting your paperwork in! I will be sending home another copy of the packing list on Monday so you can begin to prepare for camp. We will be departing from LFP on Monday, September 23rd at 8am and arrive back at LFP on Wednesday, September 25th between 4:30 and 5:00. There will be a chaperone meeting next Thursday at 5:30, just before Back to School night begins.

We have begun a new math curriculum this year. It is very different from our previous math curriculum. We have been working on multiplication, volume, and order of operations. The students seem to be enjoying it. They are recording in their math journals, learning lots of new vocabulary, working in pairs and teams, and looking at problems and equations in various ways. You will notice there is less homework with this math curriculum, plan to see math homework 1-2 times a week.

Back to school night is next Thursday. Please plan to attend and learn about what your child be learning in 5th grade! The session for 5th graders is at 7:35. Hope to see you there!

Instrumental Music has begun! Student got to try out instruments today. They will receive more info next week regarding what instrument they should get, the music book they will need, and instrument rental information.

Please send in $4.00 for your planner if you have not already done so. Each week your child will receive a newsletter on Fridays that will contain important dates and info about what we are doing in our class. It will also report whether they have turned in all of their work for the week. This week I am sending this electronic copy and there is no specific assignments reported, that will begin next week!
