Elementary General Music Program
Each student in Shoreline K – 6 receives 120 minutes of music with-in a two week period. The concepts of rhythm, melody, form, texture, expression and tone color are taught through a variety of activities. These activities may include: singing, playing instruments, movement/dance, reading musical notation, listening to a variety of musical styles, composition and improvisation. Shoreline has recently adopted the “Spotlight on Music “ curriculum, and will begin its use in 2016-17.
Echo Lake is an exception to this program. EL has multi-art instruction with-in the same time period.
Elementary Instrumental Program
Students in Shoreline have the opportunity to begin an instrument in 5th grade. Instruments are selected in the fall. Students participate in Band or Orchestra for 45 minutes twice a week. All of our schools have a band and orchestra program for 5th and 6th graders. Students learn the fundamentals of their instrument, and continue work with music reading.
Middle School Music Offerings
As students enter into 7th grade, they have the option to sign up for Band, Orchestra or Choir . Students continue development in sound production and music reading. Performance skills are demonstrated through school concerts and regional music events.
High School Music Offerings
The music program at the secondary level provides practical application of music fundamentals through performance based opportunities. In general terms, five areas of instruction are emphasized: tone production, listening skills, music reading, musical knowledge and performance skills.
Course offerings include varying levels of Band, Orchestra and Choir. Opportunities also exist with piano lab and AP Music Theory.
