The Power of One Senior Volunteer program places volunteers 55 years and older in the Shoreline Public Schools as tutors, mentors, and classroom helpers. Senior citizens make an enormous contribution to the education of our community’s children in both time and talent. Volunteers log many hours helping schools.

The bulk of this service takes the form of reading and math tutors who come on a weekly basis to work with students who are behind in school for whatever reasons. Other adults work directly in the classroom with teachers providing extra hands for small group projects. Many volunteers work with students (elementary to high school) who speak little or no English. Some volunteers mentor students who are having difficulty in the classroom socially. One volunteer just plays ping-pong with middle school students during lunch; yet he is a powerful role model of adults interacting with teenagers at a time when neither group has much interest in each other. All our volunteers made a difference in the lives of individual children and show them that there are many caring adults in our community who want them to succeed at their education.

The Power of One Senior Volunteer program strives to support the volunteers who give so much to the education of our children. The Back to School Orientation held at the beginning of the school year is designed to develop a sense of camaraderie and shared purpose among the volunteers by sharing news and information about recent developments in education, the Shoreline School District and our own program. As the year progresses, volunteers can meet monthly to discuss their work and any questions or issues that arise from it. Volunteers can also take advantage of periodic training offered by experts in the school district such as beginning computer lessons or the more comprehensive All City Tutor Training that is offered free to volunteers four times a year.
