Shoreline Instructional Technology

Shoreline Technology Goals and Standards

Technology Vision Statement

Our students, and those responsible for their education, live in a world increasingly dependent on the routine use of technology for academic, social, personal, and work-related activities.  The Shoreline School District believes it is an institutional obligation to provide students and staff with the skills and access to appropriate technologies to enhance the quality of teaching and learning, provide efficiencies in time and work, and enable more effective communications within the entire school community.  Toward these ends, we are committed to maintaining a viable technological infrastructure, supporting all staff in the effective integration of technology and instruction, and providing students with authentic and meaningful opportunities to use technology to increase their academic achievement and to become fully prepared for future success in a complex 21st century world.

Lastly, we are very cognizant of the integral role that our community has played – and will continue to play – in generously supporting our technological development as we consistently strive for ongoing educational improvement.  Our vision for technology in Shoreline’s schools includes an explicit acknowledgment of the importance of using available technologies to keep parents and residents fully informed of the efforts, successes, and challenges that are so vital to the education of their children.

Technology Standards

As is the case with core academic areas, Shoreline follows the guidelines and standards set forth by the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI). OSPI has adopted standards for both teacher integration and student literacy that are based on national standards developed by the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE). Both the teacher and student standards are based on a definition of technology literacy/fluency and are structured in a 3-tier format. More details on these can be found in the following documents:

Beginning in the 2006-2007 school year, all certificated staff and 8th grade students are required by OSPI to annually complete an online self-appraisal survey to gauge progress along the 3-tier continuum. In the district's recently adopted (and OSPI-approved) technology plan for 2007-2010, goals centered on benchmarks for increasing the percentage of staff and students reaching Tiers II and III.

Technology Literacy Goal:  Students will learn and apply technology skills identified as essential for 21st Century learning and work environments.

SMART Goal Statement: By Spring of 2010, there will be a 50% shift in students from Tier 1 to Tier 2 and from Tier 2 to Tier 3.

Technology Integration Goal:  Increasingly transparent integration of technology across all major content areas.

SMART Goal Statement: By 2010, 70% of teachers will be identified as Tier 2 or Tier 3 on the Technology Integration Self-Assessment Survey
